Can You Use Your Old Converter with Lithium Batteries?

Welcome to another edition of Tech Tip Tuesday, brought to you by Big Beard Battery! If you’re considering switching your RV to lithium batteries, you might be wondering: Can you use your old converter with lithium? Let’s break it down and help you make the best choice for your power setup.

Your Old Converter and Lithium Batteries

Yes, you can technically use your old converter with lithium batteries. However, there’s a catch—you won’t be getting a full charge. Lithium batteries require a higher charging voltage than traditional lead-acid batteries, and most standard RV converters just don’t provide enough juice.

Why Lithium Needs 14.4–14.6 Volts

Your typical RV converter has a maximum voltage output of around 13.6 volts in absorption mode. That might sound close enough, but lithium batteries need 14.4 to 14.6 volts to reach full charge. If your converter can’t supply this voltage, your lithium battery will only charge to about 80% capacity—leaving a lot of potential power unused.

The Problem with Cell Imbalance

At first, this may not seem like a big issue, but over time, cell imbalance can develop in your lithium battery. Each lithium battery is made up of four individual cells, and they need to remain balanced for optimal performance. If one cell drops too low while the others are getting power, the Battery Management System (BMS) could shut the entire battery down. Without a proper top charge, your lithium battery may not last as long as expected.

Should You Upgrade Your Converter?

While it’s possible to use your old converter for a while, upgrading to a lithium-compatible converter is highly recommended. The upgrade doesn’t have to be immediate, but at some point, if you want to get the full potential out of your lithium battery, you’ll need to switch to a converter that can properly charge it.

Wire Size Considerations

Another important factor to keep in mind when upgrading your converter is wire size. If you’re replacing your converter with one that can charge lithium batteries faster, you may need to increase the wire gauge to handle the increased current. This ensures safe and efficient charging.

Final Thoughts

Switching to lithium batteries is a great investment for your RV, offering longer lifespan, deeper discharge capabilities, and faster charging. However, to maximize performance, upgrading your converter is a smart move. While you can temporarily use your old converter, it’s not a long-term solution.
